Valerie Cartright for State Senate

Valerie Cartright recently interviewed with Black Long Island's very own Deborah Payton-Jones (Moderator) to discuss her current campaign for NYS Senate (Senate District 1). 

Valerie Cartright is currently serving in fourth term as Councilwoman of the Brookhaven Towns Council (Council District 1), a position she has held since January 2014. She is also the first African American Women of Haitian decent to serve on the Town Board. Cartright also serves as the Town Board liaison for the Brookhaven Black History Commission.   

Councilwoman Cartright has a proven track record of legislative accomplishment. She has advocated on local and state level by writing, making calls and personally pushing changes with respect to addressing issues from fair housing, Healthcare, Mental Health and Substances Abuse just to name a few. In addition, Cartright recently advocated on local and state level related to COVID -19, requesting local and state funding on behalf of her constituents to assure they have the proper resources needed during the pandemic.



Councilwoman Valerie Cartright has practiced law for over sixteen years, focusing on civil rights and criminal defense. She has an extremely distinctive professional and personal portfolio. Cartright is a survivor, daughter, wife and mother whose willingness is to listen and represent not only her constituents of Council District 1, but all constituents of Brookhaven Town.
